Valerie Calvillo MA, CAC II, DV
Hello, my name is Valerie Calvillo. I have always believed that where there is a will, there is a way. I enjoy helping people find the way to whatever it is they will. To pursue this goal of helping people, I received a B.A in Psychology from Colorado State University with a minor in music in 1998. My M.A in Community Counseling was completed at Argosy University in Denver, Colorado in 2009. After graduate school I finished my CAC II, which is a Certified Addictions Counselor, level two. I have worked with children and adolescents in a variety of situations including foster care, career mentorship, teen pregnancy, residential treatment clients and even summer camp. I have a passion for helping adolescents because I believe that they are in a unique position where they are embarking upon their own path and are just waiting to be helped along the way. There is something pretty powerful in witnessing a young person transition from child to adult and it is my goal to help adolescents do so successfully and confidently no matter what situation they may find themselves in currently.
As a therapist, my foundational approach is Narrative Therapy. I believe every individual person has a life story and the ability to change this story if they so desire. A person's story begins with their thoughts and feelings, and these thoughts and feelings lead to actions and behavior. This is why I also utilize techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy where thoughts are examined and changed to create the story you want to have.
